Fun with Ferris Wheels in Math 6!

Our math department head, Mr. Peter Olson and the curriculum coordinator, Susan Steele came to our 6th grade math class to teach a special lesson and hang with us for a day! We watched a short clip about two kids riding Ferris Wheels and presenting a problem that we needed to solve. If the large Ferris Wheel makes one rotation in 60 seconds and the smaller Ferris Wheel makes a rotation in 20 seconds, how many turns will each have to make before our character is at the bottom? We had several problems with different conditions where our students drew pictures and wrote our explanations in finding solutions. It was fun to see how students solved the same problem in different ways. We also had a great class discussion on the relationships between the different numbers in our problems and the math terms for those relationships. Below, you will see the students in action as they work through some different problems....

Here is our final display! Each group created their own poster and we hung them all up as we talked about the different ways to solve the same problems. The students did a wonderful job and had a great time in math class today! They reached back in their memories from a few chapters ago and pulled out some great thoughts pertaining to multiples and factors.
