Cooking: Mexican style!

Cooking was so much fun this last quarter! I don't like to do the same theme twice, so decided to have the students explore Mexican flavors and they loved it!! We began with some simple salsa and guacamole, then moved on to empanadas, enchiladas, Mexican lasagna, nachos, and a couple different kinds of churros. Their favorites were chocolate cupcakes with Mexican hot chocolate frosting and the Mexican lasagna. Cooking was just as much fun as eating and they all chipped in to help clean up and take care of the dishes. I was really impressed at their level of maturity and responsibility. Below are a few photos from our time together.

We had a daily routine when students came in the door. They were to set down their books, wash their hands, and put on an apron. Then, we would gather around the table to read the recipe and discuss different jobs they would like to do. Dishes were done as we cooked and had to be completed before we could eat at the end of class. Everyone did a fabulous job of pitching in to chop veggies, stir sauces, and fry tortillas. Students were willing to let others have first choice and exemplified a self-less attitude.

For this particular dish, they were more excited about licking out the chocolate after drizzling it over the tortillas! They each grabbed a spoon and worked out a system for licking up the chocolate! Then, they ate the yummy tortillas!

G and J (shown below) are really creative and did great with deviating from the recipe and adding more flavor! They really enjoyed spicing up our dishes and everyone approved! G is my neighbor upstairs and even cooks dinners for his family! He and his brother take turns to cook dinner on certain nights per week! He loves cooking! G is the blonde.

J is full of life, loves people, and loves to eat great food! He is the life of the party and lights up the room with his presence! Let the fun times begin! He has also left behind some stories...;)
