Spring Art Show featuring Middle School Students!

Welcome to our Art Show! Art is offered as an elective during the last period of the day, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This quarter, we explored some different painting styles and looked at the lives of a few artists. We began with Jackson Pollock and his dripping style of painting as seen below. Students enjoyed dripping paint outside and were encouraged to think carefully where they wanted to drip their paint. The paintings below are several examples of student work.

For our next project, we explored Edgar Degas impressionism and looked at his ballerina paintings. We watched a short video on dance which I am including below. We talked about how to show different movements, using our skills of observation as we draw people and working with oil crayons and paints. Students chose a painting and put their own style into the drawing and colors.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian artist who created The Scream.   Students first saw The Scream and were unsure yet curious to know more about the artist and his reasons for painting this particular scene. The story behind the painting is fascinating! Edvard lost his mother and sister at a very young age and suffered bouts of depression during his life. The sunset behind this particular painting has been attributed to the eruption of Krakatoa, whose effects could be seen. Students have been choosing the projects we have explored this elective and I was surprised when they chose Edvard Munch's The Scream. The began by drawing the screaming figure then drew things that make them scream in the background. I am continually amazed at the talent and creativity of our students!

Finally, we explored pointillism and the life of Georges Seurat along with some of his works. Students really enjoyed his style and used Q-tips and watercolors to paint after drawing a simple landscape scene.

Before our Art Show last Friday, students were also encouraged to bring any works they have done the past quarter. The two following pieces were created by students apart from the art elective. The second one is a digital piece created by an artist who loves drawing and creating her own mythical animals and has a passion for Anime. The first was created by an artist who has a love for horses and draw this piece representing a character from Alice in Wonderland.

Stay tuned for next year as I will continue to teach Art to all of our middle school students and will have more pieces and stories to share with you! Until then, may God continue to share his beauty and creativity through your lives!
