The Beauty of Gratitude in the Classroom

I remember when I was a Senior at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy and I had turned 18 in September which meant I could vote. There were a few other classmates who were also old enough to vote, so a lady (don't remember who) drove us to a voting center to vote and then brought us back to school. When we got out of the car, I responded with a "thank-you." She complimented me for being grateful and how much she appreciated my thoughtfulness.

In my Math 8 classroom, I have two students who consistently say, "thank you" as they leave when class is over. Even as sometimes, they are struggling to understand what we are learning, they still respond with a "thank you." It feels so good to be thanked for all the work that is put into teaching.

A few weeks ago, two students were working together and the one called me over to help. Last year, this student was consistently struggling with classroom behavior, engagement, and keeping up with homework. This year, I have noticed a huge difference in all of these areas! He has been consistently doing his homework, engagement has improved with asking questions to understand concepts and is generally so much more respectful of teachers and peers.

When he asked me over for help, I noticed that he was working with another student and that they were working well together! Both of these students have a tendency to distract others. I also noticed that this student was helping the other student work out the homework problems when usually he is the one asking for help. I walked over and guided them through a problem and when we were finished, he responded with "thank you." I said "your welcome" and wandered away but was so amazed at his sweet, respectful gratitude! That really made my day!

Since last year, I have asked for prayer for this student and KNOW that becuase of so many prayers, God has been working in his life! I am continually amazed at how God works in the lives of my students! Thank you so much for praying! Your prayers really do make a difference!
