Fraction Fun with M&M's!

Every teacher dreams of students who love to learn, are eager to work hard, and of course full of smiles! I have found those students at BFA! The students in Math 6 are a joy to teach! I enjoy every moment spent with them in the classroom, in the hallways and even times outside of school! Giving hugs, sweet smiles, fun and zany humor, chocolates, Pringles chips, drawings (including a student drawing smiley faces on her test for me to find later;), not to mention active participation in class! During our practice time, they eagerly begin working through the three sets of problems, each set a little harder ending with a few challenge problems. Sometimes, they are so excited about the challenge problem, they want to tackle the hard one first! Of course, throwing out little candies for correct answers could be increasing their motivation a bit! :)

For the activity pictured, the students were sorting the colored M&M's, then creating fractions that consisted of the number of red M&M's over the total M&M's. After they created their fractions and simplified, students began adding and subtracting different fractions. The activity was found on https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ and originally called for Skittles which are not found in Germany. M&M's work great and the students enjoyed eating them at the end of class! Yum!!

A few years ago, during Spiritual Emphasis Week, a student was asked "What is the best thing about Middle School"? Her reply which continues to occur on a yearly basis was "You can fit inside your locker"! I was walking through the halls this week during lunch when I saw this particular student inside his locker! Don't you just love his smile!!
