Math 6 Explores Ratios and Proportions: Running, baking, cycling, drawing, and more!

My 6th graders have been exploring ratios and proportions through several different project options! They had a list of 9 different options and each student chose three projects to work on and prepare to present to the class. Options included drawing themselves with half the size, drawing the five tallest buildings in the US (or Australia) and/or the five largest land animals with a smaller scale, choosing a recipe for 2-6 people and changing it for 30, finding out how long it takes to run or ride across Texas, and more! They had one project day for the past few weeks where they created a list of what needed to be done and when before getting started. They were busy creating but also took time to help each other! I have shared some pictures of students at work and several of their completed projects at the end! Enjoy!

Check out Z's drawing skills! She drew half of herself and wrote out all of her mathematical thinking!

For this project, students needed to discover how long it would take to make a million dollars with a salary of $2500 a year.

Here are a few of the tallest buildings in the US. I love his drawing skills! So neat and precise!

Food projects are always fun! Especially when thinking about ice cream, hot fudge, and caramel sauce!

How long would it take to cycle across the state of Texas? She would take about 56 hours! No problem! :)

This student will run across Texas in 50 hours and 33 minutes.

Here is a thinking moment provided by two 6th grade boys!
