Building Conceptual understanding happens through concrete modeling as students build and draw. Having students draw our their thinking is one tool I have been utilizing in the classroom. Students are beginning to deepen their understanding in mathematics and are better equipped to solve rich problems through this process. I have been implementing building and drawing throughout math 6, math 7, and math 8. Here are a few pictures to show a peek into our 6th grade classroom. Students are sharing the strategies they are discovering for their classmates on the board. As others listen and ask questions, they are encouraged to copy these strategies down to add to their own methods.
Stay tuned as the 6th graders are finishing a their projects! They have been exploring ratios and proportions the past few weeks. Choosing three projects from a list of ideas, they will be presenting their explorations and findings this coming Tuesday!
