In the afternoons on Tuesday and Friday, we have art electives for our 7th and 8th graders. I teach two classes of students on these days. We have been exploring different elements of drawing; basic drawing skills, hands, portraits and the human body. On Friday, I put up a picture of an older gentleman with some calm Autumn music and students spent the time quietly drawing. Below are some pictures of students at work. When they finished, students chose to complete and work on other drawings.
Earlier in the week, I was sketching the same photo but did not finish it as you will see in the first drawing below. During my art elective classes on Friday, I drew him again with my first block of students which is the second drawing you will see. I drew him for the third time during my second block of students. This brought on a discussion of how valuable it is for an artist to draw the same subject over and over again from different facets to improve observation skills and drawing techniques. Stay tuned as the 5th and 6th graders will be starting a sketchbook that has them exploring value, colors, perspective and distance to begin!
