A few years ago, I did a ceramic elective and my students loved it! Not having a background in ceramics, I was able to watch some tutorial videos, chat with the high school ceramics teacher and gather materials for some basic ceramics. The high school has a kiln and the high school ceramics teacher was happy to fire our projects.
For quarter three, this year, I chose to do another ceramics unit where students could get a basic understanding of ceramics. We talked over what ceramics is, different kinds of clay, where it comes from, terms they need to know and clean-up rules. A former teacher had created the 10 commandments of ceramics (rules for ceramics), and along with resources from Kinder Art and other places, I created some slides for the first day. Then, we got into it and started exploring! Here are the projects we worked on:
- Coil pots
- Textured soapdishes
- Dragons
- Palm branches
- 2 big signs with lettering
- 2 t-shirts with writing on them
- A wooden cross
- Jesus' empty tomb
- Cardboard Easter eggs and flowers for decorations
