My fifth and sixth graders have been studying the elements of Art this year. I introduce a new element every few weeks where we define the element and look for the element in pieces of art. They have an opportunity to create something that has them practicing what they have learned. We started the year with lines and patterns, balance, color, shape to name a few and recently have been exploring movement and rhythm. I showed them Van Gogh's Starry Night and we looked at how he painted to show movement. I also shared a short film that someone created based on Starry Night where you can see the colors moving. Students began by drawing simple background shapes on white paper with a black or purple oil pastel. I had samples of the painting passed around the room for students to use and a short video to give step-by-step instructions. They used a mix of different colors to create the stars in the sky then painted the background and eventually moved to the foreground. At the end of our two-day lesson, I shared a short (kid-version) film about Vincent Van Gogh to give students some backstory of the artist. For 5th and 6th graders, most, if not all, of my ideas are coming from the website, Deep Space Sparkle. I have added a link at the bottom to this lesson on her site. I love her ideas and more importantly, the students love the art lessons and the process of learning and being creative! I took pictures the first day we started this lesson so you can see their works in progress. Enjoy!
