Abstract art is my favorite with middle school students! Creating abstract art is open-ended, creative and has students interested and invested in the creative process.
These past few weeks with the 5th and 6th graders had us looking at the art of Sonia Delaunay who created collages with layers of different colors and sizes of circles. Students chose a colored background and different scraps of paper. I set out glue, scissors and some circle templates for students to trace and cut out. Students were encouraged to create a collage of circles but could also use other geometric or organic shapes in their design.
Every art project has its challenges with students who move quickly and finish before class ends. Then, there are other students who could take 3 classes of 54 minutes to create their design. They take their time and thoughtfully take time to create their piece. Sometimes, I encourage the early finishers to go back and look at examples in order to get some new inspiration and keep going. Other times, I have a short filler project where early finishers can complete another project in a day's class which gives more time to those who are still working on their original project. It's a balancing act, really.
Below, are photos of my 5th and 6th graders creating their 2-D colorful shape collages in the style of Sonia Delaunay.
