Welcome to the Iron Chef! Middle School style!

Welcome to another day in the cooking elective! Today, we will be exploring our own understanding of how to pair different ingredients along with a dash of creativity!

Have you heard of the Iron Chef? Great! We are going to do own own Iron Chef: Middle School style!

You will be divided into two groups. You will have 5 ingredients: cream cheese, cinnamon, an apple, a few slices of ham and some sunflower seeds. Your job is to pair and create one or two dishes with these ingredients.

You may choose to use the microwave, oven, stovetop, blender, etc. and may use some butter or oil if you choose to bake or fry. You have the next 35 minutes to create something amazing then we have several 'judges' coming to taste and give feedback as to your creations.

When you are finished with your creations, I will ask you to share the name of your food creations and how you cooked, fried and put together your dish(es).

Ready to create? Go!

Both groups chose to use the stove. One group even used the peelings off their apples and fried them! I thought that was creative! Both groups fried their pieces of ham. One group also made a dipping sauce with the cream cheese and lots of cinnamon. They also added some sunflower seeds and to make sure it was all mixed, blended it in the blender. While the other group placed their cream cheese inside small pieces of ham and rolled them up.
I have posted two videos below as I spoke with each group when they were finished and they shared what they created.

We had 6 judges who came this time! We also did this activity in the Q1 elective. We had 4 adult judges and 2 student judges. They each tasted the dishes and gave their feedback as to the ham slices being too small or right sized, whether the dip had too much cinnamon or was just right (It seemed there were varying opinions on this one) and how the sunflower seeds may not have been the best pairing with the apple. On their own, the students left the room saying the judges needed to decide who was the winner! I went out with them while they discussed the groups and their dishes. As the bell rang, they chose a winning group (group 1 but I don't remember which one that was currently) to which both groups errupted into cheers and shouts as they left for their next class.
I was glad for the art elective that I had next which was much calmer! But they had so much fun and I had a blast watching them! Especially as the judges tasted and judged their food!! There were a lot of laughs! As they left, I was told that this was a fun class and they asked if they could do this again, where I give them select ingredients and they have a cook-off. Hmmm, have to think of another set of 5 ingredients!
