The cooking elective is always a favorite for our middle school students! I love to bring my own love of cooking and students together in the classroom.
My parents had an old paper booklet with recipes that was made by the Boy Scouts. It had a green cover and was about half the size of a piece of paper. The outer cover was like cardstock and the inside were paper pages. I remember that it was stained with food droppings and pancake batter as it held one of the most precious recipes of our childhood. Norwegian pancakes!
Through the years, I have made these for my family and children that I have cared for. One of the families I would babysit for would even request my Norwegian pancakes.
I had some milk leftover from our last cooking class on Tuesday, so I was considering what we could do for today, Friday. How about Norwegian pancakes vs. French crepes?! And the students can taste both! I had them vote for their favorite toppings and picked the 4 with the most votes: strawberries, lemon juice, powdered sugar and cinnamon.
I borrowed two induction burners from the Chaplain's department on the 1st floor and one of my students brought their crepe burner from home! I have two groups of nine students so 4 making crepes and 5 making pancakes. Each group worked together to get their pancake/crepe batter made then began making their pancakes/crepes. We had one crepe machine station and two pancake stations for cooking.
When everything was cooked, students chose a sample of each, added their choice of toppings, then sat down to taste and share their thoughts of which they thought tasted the best. The pancakes and crepes both received a great review! Some teachers who weren't teaching that period, came in and also had a taste!
I went around and took some photos which you will see as you scroll down. Enjoy!
We also had some Norwegian folk music for half the time and French classic music for half the time. Gotta have music to match the food!
