Pizza Fractions with 6th Graders!
Here are the 6th Graders! Last week was finals week where the 7th and 8th graders were busy studying for their exams. We reviewed math concepts while playing Jeopardy! The 6th graders do not have exams yet, so we did some different activities. They were recently working on multiplying and dividing fractions. They made 6 pizza's that were divided into different fractions, 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/8. They manipulated their pieces to find answers and to understand the concept.
I also wanted to share a story about a few 8th graders! Last week, we were working on story problems which tend to take a little more brain power! In class, we worked our way through a story problem, then got stuck going in circles on another problem. Instead of continuing the class confusion, I gave the students story problems to work on during class. I planned to map out a clearer explanation for the confusing story problem! For an added incentive, I told the students prizes would be awarded for correct answers to the story problems. Before the day was over, two students approached me with proud smiles, telling me they solved the confusing story problem! I was surprised the next day with the students who tried some problems! About half the class worked on 2 or 3 story problems! Way to go 8th graders!
